YSRC-backed candidate Putta Shailaja romps home
Minister for Civil Supplies D. Sridhar Babu has received a severe jolt with the defeat of his supporter Ch. Srinivas Reddy from the Manthani major gram panchayat, which is also the headquarters of his Manthani Assembly segment, in the first phase of the elections.
YSR Congress district convener Putta Madhu’s wife Putta Shailaja, won the election by defeating Mr. Srinivas Reddy by 2,630 votes. Of a total of 11,532 votes in the panchayat, 8,272 votes were polled. Ms. Shailaja secured 4,863 votes and Mr. Srinivas Reddy polled 2,503. However, the Congress has won 15 ward members out of a total of 18 and secured the upa-sarpanch post in the village.
The Minister had campaigned rigorously for Mr. Srinivas Reddy. On the other hand, Mr. Putta Madhu, who lost at the hands of the Minister in 2009 elections from Manthani Assembly segment, took the election of his wife seriously and campaigned extensively by using the BC card.
The Minister’s supporters, however, bagged a majority of gram panchayats in the segment. Of the total of 112 gram panchayats in the Assembly segment, the Congress supporters have won 78.
Similarly, TDP district president and Peddapalli legislator Ch. Vijayaramana Rao, campaigned vigorously for his supporter G. Rayamallu from the Sultanabad major gram panchayat, but Mr. Rayamallu lost to Congress supporter Annaiah Goud. Of a total of 7,289 votes polled, the Congress candidate secured 3,725 votes and the TDP candidate polled only 1,154 votes.
Incidentally, the Peddapalli MP (TRS) G. Vivekanand had also campaigned for his party- supported candidate P. Vaikuntapathi, who was placed in the third position.
