The ‘maha dharna’ staged with the slogan ‘Mana gas mana hakku’, meaning ‘our gas our right’, here on Wednesday evoked a good response.

Hundreds of people joined the protest, which was led by MP G.V. Harsha Kumar, demanding that the gas being explored from the Krishna Godavari (KG) Basin be first used to meet local requirements. Excess, if any, should be allocated to other States.

People from all mandals of the Konaseema area participated in the dharna, which was staged at the busy Clock Tower centre. ddressing the participants, the MP said: “The State is facing acute shortage of power, and the demand for gas from gas-based power plants is high. The gas being explored by the ONGC in the KG Basin and other private players such as Cairn Energy, Reliance, and GSPC should first be used for domestic consumption and the excess thereafter sold to other States.” “No company should be allowed to claim right over gas explored in KG Basin at the cost of our interests. We are ready to block roads, stage dharna in front of gas production centres, and stall operations if the situation demands,” Mr. Harsha Kumar said.
