He sprang a surprise when he was picked up to don the mayoral robes. He is set to raise the eyebrows again when he throws his hat into the electoral ring. Mayor Mohd. Majid Husain, who has recently put in his papers, is tipped to be the Majlis candidate from the Nampally Assembly segment in the forthcoming elections.
Though there is no official word yet, sources say his candidature is almost finalised from the Nampally constituency. Pleased with his performance, the Majlis leadership is believed to have decided to reward him with an MLA ticket. His resignation post-haste from the mayoral post is a clear indication of the bigger role the party has chalked out for him.
There are also reports of his being asked to contest the Secunderabad Parliament seat. But the Majlis might not field him in a place where it is not too strong. But insiders say Mr. Husain is the best bet to consolidate the Majlis position in Secunderabad constituency which the party contested unsuccessfully on three occasions. Mr. Husain, who has emerged as the most visible face of the party after the Owaisi brothers, would click with the voters, it is felt.
“I have no idea at all. It is for the Sadar saheb (Asaduddin Owaisi) to decide,” said Mr. Husain. “I am happy that the party reposed faith in me as a Mayor,” he said.
Incidentally, this Ahmednagar corporator is the longest serving Majlis Mayor. He occupied the coveted post for 26 months to be precise.
Sitting Nampally legislator Virasat Rasool Khan has fared well in the last five years. But sources say he has been unsuccessful in checking the growing influence of Feroz Khan, who switched over to the Congress from PRP, in his constituency.
