The burden on Centre to be
Rs. 800 crore
Farmers in 17 districts eligible for the facility
GUNTUR: Relaxation of the rules in waiver of agriculture loans will benefit an additional 5 lakh farmers with a burden of Rs.800 crore on the Centre for Andhra Pradesh alone.
This decision by the Union Finance Ministry came on Saturday, which makes all farmers whose loans taken from public sector/cooperative lending institutions prior to March 31, 1997, but rescheduled or restructured in 2004 or 2006 eligible for waiver.
In Andhra Pradesh 17 districts fall into ambit of this with exception of Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Krishna, East and West Godavari districts.
Those eligible in the coastal region would be Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore with a number of districts from Rayalaseema and Telangana.
Guntur district alone benefits to the tune of Rs.38 crore with 40,000 farmers becoming eligible for fresh loans with old loans waived by end of this month.
The farmer leader and former Rajya Sabha Member Yelamanchili Sivaji has welcomed the decision of the Union Finance Ministry, which would benefit a large number of farming community deserving this waiver of loan.
