Project was jointly undertaken by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh in 1985

Minister for Major Irrigation P. Sudarshan Reddy has assured farmers of Madnoor and Bichkunda mandals of releasing water for irrigation from the Lendi inter-State project by June 2012.

After visiting the project site at Gojegaon village in Deglur taluq in Maharashtra, reviewing the progress of works with the engineering authorities of both the States at the project camp office on Friday, the Minister said the State government as its share so far released Rs.142 crore for the construction of the project.

An amount of Rs.20 crore was sanctioned for the canal lining works and of which Rs.11 crore was already released.

The remaining amount would also be released shortly, said the Minister.

As per the revised estimates, the project costs Rs.554 crore.

1974 project survey

The project was jointly undertaken by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh in the year 1985 with an intention to provide water to 22,000 acres in Madnoor and Bichkunda mandals of the district.

The project survey was done in 1974. At that point of time, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh agreed to bear the costs in the ratio of 62 and 38 respectively.

Even after 26 years, the project is yet to be completed as inordinate delay took place in land acquisition. Often problems arose as regards the land acquisition for small canals, while the acquisition for main canal was over.

The canal work was entrusted to a private engineering company based in Hyderabad and it is alleged that coordination between the company and the Irrigation Department was found lacking.

Besides, it is learnt that farmers being reluctant to give up cultivable land are raising objection to the land acquisition resulting in stoppage of the money distribution for acquisition.

The Minister earlier, attended the Kalyanamastu programme at Hanuman temple at Salabathpur and blessed 11 couples who got married under the TTD scheme. Meanwhile, the police foiled the attempt of the TRS workers to obstruct the Minister at the mandal headquarter.

Local MLA Hanmanth Shindey, Zilla Parishad vice-chairman Taher Bin Hamdan, the SE, Irrigation Rajeswar Reddy accompanied the Minister.
