The Left and the Telugu Desam parties that are undertaking ‘padayatras’ in the city have been asked to stop misleading the people.

City Congress working president Meesala Rajeswara Rao, addressing a press conference at Andhra Ratna Bhavan here on Thursday, said that the Left parties were at the helm of affairs for two terms in the municipal corporation beginning in 1981 and 1995 neglected the parts of the city where the poor lived.

The Municipal Corporation that was ruled by the CPI and the CPI (M) borrowed Rs.100 crore for development of the city and spent a large chunk of it in the posh localities of the city. Without providing basic amenities to the people on the hillslopes and the old town areas money was spent for laying of underground drainage in Patamata, Mr. Rao alleged.

It was the elected representatives of the Congress party that got additional funds to the city from different sources and developed it, he said. In the recent term, the elected representatives of the party strived for inclusion of Vijayawada city in JNNURM scheme and got funds for proving housing and civic amenities like roads and drains under the Urban Renewal Mission and RAY.

Mr. Rao said that a team of leaders deputed by AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi would visit the city on Friday.
