In a rare gesture, all the trade unions of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited thanked Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari for her initiative to stop disinvestment of the navratna company and asked her to lead a team of leaders from North Andhra to Delhi to present their case before Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.

The leaders – Mantri Rajasekhar (INTUC), D. Adinarayana, J. Ramakrishna (AITUC), J. Ayodhyaram (CITU), Varasala Srinivasa Rao (JMS), D. Sureshbabu and K. Prakasa Rao (DITU) met her at her camp office in MVP Colony and conveyed their gratitude to her for articulating their viewpoint before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Ministers Beni Prasad Verma and Anand Sharma.

The leaders requested her to lead a team comprising Ministers from the district and MPs from North Andhra to Delhi to discuss with Mr. Chidambaram their demand against disinvestment of RINL, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

The IPO of RINL was put off on October 9 as the Empowered Group of Ministers could not come to a conclusion on fixing the price band. The union leaders contended that VSP was the pride of Andhra Pradesh and it should remain in the public sector. Ms. Purandeswari promised to take an appointment with Mr. Chidambaram once he is back from his overseas trip.
