Core committee to spearhead HC Bench stir

A core committee was set up on Sunday to spearhead the agitation for establishment of a division Bench of AP High Court in the city.

The advocates will abstain from court work for three days from Monday to highlight their demand reviving the demand for separate bench after 17 years. The city lawyers had spearheaded the agitation for a record 103 days in 1993.

Visakhapatnam Bar Association president D.V.S.S. Somayajulu said after the meeting of office-bearers of bar associations from Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts that the core committee would finalise the future course of action soon.

As prior notice has to be given, the committee decided to allow moving of bail petitions on the first day of three-day boycott programme. It will be a complete boycott on Tuesday and Wednesday. A huge procession will be taken out on Tuesday from the district court complex here to the Collectorate to press for the bench.

A meeting of representatives from the bar associations from Seema Andhra at Eluru to discuss the demand for division bench on Sunday was cancelled.
