KURNOOL: District Congress Committee secretary M. Sudhakar Babu announced indefinite fast on Saturday urging the government to waive property tax in Kurnool city to provide relief to the flood affected families.

The decision has irked the party leaders in the district and MLA T.G. Venkatesh who is looking after the corporation affairs asked Mr. Sudhakar Babu to defer his protest saying that he would prevail upon the government to extend the concession to the flood victims.

However, Mr. Sudhakar Babu remained unrelenting on the ground that he had postponed the protest several times in the past and now the corporation has issued demand notices to all property holders in the city.

The impact of the total waiver would be around Rs. 16 crore. Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy told The Hindu that they were requesting the government to reimburse the property tax so that the relief could not be a burden on the resource starved corporation.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sudhakar Babu said it was unfair to demand property tax from the residents who suffered untold miseries during the flood. Hundreds of small and medium business men expected a block grant of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh but the government shook off its responsibility by entrusting it to the banks.
