The bypoll for the Kukatpally municipal division was peaceful with no untoward incident reported from any of the 72 polling stations on Sunday.
Poll percentage was put at 35.39 per cent with 13,723 men and 11,115 women exercising their franchise. Counting of votes would begin from 8 a.m. onwards on Tuesday .
GHMC Deputy Commissioner for the division N. Ravi Kiran said no complaints were received and hence there would be no repoll. One Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) unit was replaced in the morning after a glitch was noticed, but it happened much before the polling began at 7 a.m. A mock poll was conducted before allowing the votes to be polled till 5 p.m.
Four hundred and fifty personnel were on poll duty and 90 EVMs were put into service. Eleven candidates, including the wife of the deceased Telugu Desam corporator D. Sobhanadri, D. Venkata Swarajyam, are in the fray for the Kukatpally division. Harish Chandra Reddy of Congress and B. Viveswara Rao of the BJP are the other major candidates.
The bypoll was held because of the sudden death of the corporator. Eight other candidates along with seven independents are also in the contest. After the election, the EVMs have been shifted to a strong room inside the circle office premises at Moosapet and provided with armed security .
