Former bureaucrat Koppula Raju has been appointed chairman of the SC department of the AICC on Monday. Mr. Raju, who was till recently secretary of the National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, had opted for voluntary retirement before taking the plunge into politics. He is considered close to AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

An officer of the 1981 batch of IAS, Mr. Raju was associated with the poverty eradication initiatives of the AP government.
