ANANTAPUR: The Telugu Desam Party on Thursday demanded a probe by a sitting judge of the High Court into the killing of 85 party leaders and activists at the hands of their Congress rivals since the Congress assumed power in the State.

The party leaders also alleged that Minister for Panchayat Raj and Endowments was behind all the 27 killings, which took place in Anantapur district.

Talking to newspersons here after participating in the cremation of Suryapratap Reddy at Thimmampalli village in Yellanur mandal, party leaders M. Jagannatham, K. Srihari, S. Venugopalachary, B. Shobha Nagi Reddy, K. Srinivasulu and others alleged that the number of victims was very high as a factionist was ruling the State. They found fault with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for giving a clean chit to J.C. Diwakar Reddy, even before the investigation into the murder case made any progress.

They alleged that such statements would definitely influence the investigation . It would also divert the direction of the investigation, they alleged.

By taking sides, the Chief Minister was not allowing the law to take its own course.

They demanded removal of J.C. Diwakar Reddy from the Ministry .

They also blamed the police for following double standards in registering the cases, as they had booked cases of conspiracy and abetment of murder against K. Pedda Reddy, merely on the complaints lodged by his rivals. However, the police had not booked cases against J.C. Diwakar Reddy, his brother and son, though Sureedu's son had named them among the suspects . The police were playing into the hands of ruling party, they alleged.

They demanded the police to register the case based on the complaint given by the family members of Suryapratap Reddy.
