VISAKHAPATNAM: Minister for Major Industries and Commerce Kanna Lakshminarayana has recalled the efforts of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for the promotion of higher education in the State.
Participating as chief guest at the annual day celebrations of Al-Ameer Group of colleges “Vibrant - 2010” here on Friday, the Minister said that YSR had made tremendous efforts in setting up 18 universities and IIIT. Fee re-imbursement was introduced for EBC s, SC s and ST s to enable academically talented students to go for higher education in spite of their lack of finances.
Mr. Lakshminarayana said that YSR had introduced 4 per cent reservation to minorities in higher education. He said it was unfortunate that the High Court had struck down the same. He, however, said that Chief Minister K. Rosaiah was taking up the issue with the Supreme Court to uphold YSR' s promise to the people. He commended the founder president of Al-Ameer Group Jeelani for contributing to the educational development of minorities and others through his colleges.
Bhemmunipatnam MLA M. Srinivasa Rao advised students to hone their communication skills apart from academic excellence to stay ahead in the global competition.
General Manager (projects) of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant S.S. Kumar, Al-Ameer Group Chairman Vaziruddin Ahmed Siddiqui, Principal in charge of Al-Ameer College of Engineering and IT G. Madhusudhana Rao and Principal of Al-Aman College of Engineering K. Subba Reddi were among those who spoke.
