The Kalyanamastu programme held here on Friday was marred by a controversy over the alleged second marriage of a person. Minister for Horticulture R. Venkat Reddy and officials of the district participated in the ceremony.
Trouble broke out soon after the marriage of N. Ramakrishna, 32, a resident of Khammam, with a woman of Nizampet of Khammam urban mandal, held at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Kalyanamandapam here.
A woman, claiming to be the first wife of Ramakrishna, arrived at the venue along with her three children and some relatives minutes after the mass marriage.
On seeing them, Ramakrishna reportedly fled from the venue, leaving behind the new bride. The agitated relatives then turned their ire against the “bride” and made repeated attempts to attack her. Acting swiftly, the police shifted the bride to a nearby police station. Khammam Revenue Divisional Officer V. Venkateshwarlu said the Urban Tahsildar has been asked to file a case against Ramakrishna at the Two Town police station. “A memo has been issued to the Tahsildar,” he said.
A total of 3,136 marriages were performed under the sixth phase of the programme in the district on Friday. About 854 marriages were conducted in Bhadrachalam division.
