People throng over 100 shops selling firecrackers at Swaraj Maidan
VIJAYAWADA: All roads led to the sprawling Swaraj Maidan on Friday as enthusiastic denizens thronged the 100-odd shops selling a wide range of firecrackers on the eve of Deepavali.
With just a few hours left for the much-awaited festival of lights, children, along with their parents, were seen busy buying their choicest crackers keen to light up the city skyline with breathtaking fire works.
With prayers on the lips, the traders were hoping that the hot weather would continue for one more day, as any unwarranted downpour might prove dear to them.
"Though the sales were lukewarm a few days ago, it is picking gradually. Usually, most people love to shop on the day of Deepavali expecting further cut in the price," says M. Venkateswara Rao of Sri Vighneswara Fireworks.
According to the traders, a good number of fancy items have flooded the market and most of them were rockets, offering more than 200 shots, which would add splendour to the sky. "We also have a variety of bombs, flower pots and colourful sparklers for children," Mr. Rao added.
Vijayakrishna Super Bazaar has set up eight shops at Swaraj Maidan offering both loose and packed crackers to customers.
"We are offering 75 per cent discount on any purchase. One can get 14 items in the Rs. 100 pack, 28 items in Rs. 200 pack and 47 items in Rs. 400 pack," said a super bazaar employee.
