The Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) has brought 750ha in the upland parts of West Godavari district under irrigation during the year by giving a facelift to several ponds as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).
According to P. Praveen Kumar, the ITC Area Manager, the company has spent Rs. 40 lakh for revival of four tanks with an ayacut of 750 acres falling under Buttayagudem, Koyyalagudem and Gopalapuram mandals.
The holding capacity of the tanks has gone up with removal of silt and strengthening of bunds taken up under the ITC’s Integrated Watershed Development Programme.
With the water supplied from these tanks, the fields were restored to re-use with the cultivation of paddy, maize and the other vegetable crops. Mr. Pravin Kumar said the ITC was also considering a proposal for revival of another 5-6 tanks in the upland tracts.
