The imposition of additional power cuts by the APTransco from Friday evoked strong protests from villagers in Kusumanchi and various other mandals in the district.
Irate electricity consumers mainly comprising farmers of Ponnekal village in Khammam rural mandal staged a demonstration in front of the local electricity sub-station near Maddulapalli in the afternoon.
The protesters raised slogans denouncing the alleged indiscriminate power outages.
A section of them laid siege to the sub-station accusing the field staff concerned with failing to redress their grievances such as delay in replacement of faulty electricity meters and issuance of inflated electricity bills.
Tension prevailed at the sub-station when the protesters tried to block the entry and exit of the staff.
They relented only after the intervention of the senior officials who assured to convey their grievances to the higher-ups. Meanwhile, an electrical transformer exploded on the roadside in the heart of Kusumanchi on Friday. A two-wheeler was gutted in the fire that broke out under the impact of the transformer blast, sources added.
