The 90th birth anniversary of ace singer Ghantasala was celebrated here on Tuesday under the auspices of Ghantasala Gana Samithi.
Collector C. Sudharsan Reddy, who attended the function as chief guest, garlanded the statue at Ayakar Bhavan centre near Chinna Park and addressed the gathering.
He described Ghantasala as a person who devoted his entire life to music.
He considered music as his divine duty and never saw a vocation in it.
In a representation to the government through Collector, the office-bearers of Ghantasala Gana Samithi urged the authorities to introduce life and achievements of Ghantasala in the academic syllabus of students. They felt that an artiste like Ghantasala should be alive in the minds of public for ever and be immortalised.
Singers Sudharani and Yalamarthi Ramanaiah rendered popular numbers of Ghantasala as a tribute to him.
The Collector and the committee planned to organise a musical evening in memory of Ghantasala on December 15 at Sunayana Auditorium. Samithi members P. Chandrasekhar, Vasudeva Murthy, Prahlad, K.C. Kalkura, Jaganmohan Gupta were present.
