The five-day inter-school cricket tournament began at the Government Polytechnic College Ground here on Saturday morning.

Nizamabad Cricket Association president G. Chandrasen Reddy declared the tournament open.

In all, 14 school teams are taking part in the event. The tournament is being conducted for children below 16 years of age and those who perform well will be sent to the inter-district cricket competition to be held in Hyderabad in the third week of this month.

Because of quarterly exams and Dasara holidays, less number of teams had given names this year. However, many young players were coming forward to play in these competitions, said Suresh Babu, association joint secretary. The inaugural match was held between Holy Mary School and the SRDG School.

The valedictory will be held on 17, said Mr. Chandrasen Reddy.
