More than 100 experts from India, USA, Japan, China and other countries will deliberate on earthquake precursors at a three-day international workshop being organised by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here from Thursday.


According to R.K. Chadha, scientist, NGRI and chairman, local organising committee, NGRI was involved in precursor studies in the Koyna- Warna region in Maharashtra to develop models for earthquake forecasting.

Similarly, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology was operating observatories in Ghuttu in the Himalayan region to observe precursory changes prior to large earthquakes.

Future direction

The workshop will discuss future direction of research in the field of precursor studies leading to possible earthquake forecasting, Dr. Chadha said.
