HYDERABAD: A television journalist, Sheikh Kareemullah (39), was seriously wounded when his in-laws threw acid on him and attacked him with a knife and a hammer in his house in Banjara Hills on Tuesday.

Kareem was rushed to Apollo Hospitals where his condition is described as critical. He suffered 30 per cent acid burns on his head. His eyes have also been damaged .

Police arrested Sharat Kumar (25) and Sambasiva Rao (60), brother and father of his wife Sirisha, on the charge of attempt to murder. The attack was apparently a sequel to Karim’s second marriage to Sirisha which was resented by her family. Police said Kumar and Rao along with another woman went to the journalist’s house around 10 a.m. ostensibly to discuss the complaints they filed against each other before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) over the marriage. “It appears Kumar and Rao planned the attack and came there carrying chilli powder and a bottle of acid,” Inspector Iqbal Siddiqui told reporters.

In the middle of discussions Kumar suddenly threw the acid on the unsuspecting journalist. When Kareem ran into the bathroom to wash the acid Kumar chased and attacked him with a barber’s knife. He also picked up a hammer and hit him on his head. Meanwhile, Sirisha was said to have rushed to the rescue of her husband and called in the police. Apollo doctors said Kareem suffered 30 per cent burns on his scalp, skull and back.

Kareem, working in a Telugu news channel, was facing a dowry harassment case after his first wife Zamrut Begum lodged a complaint.
