NELLORE: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has something to cheer about. The Integrated Novel Development in Rural Areas and Model Municipal Areas (Indiramma) programme has brought victory to the ruling party in more than two-thirds of Indiramma model villages in the recently held panchayat polls.
The party was able to make great strides in villages where the Indiramma programme was implemented, if the elections results are any indication. The party won more than 270 out 380 Indiramma model villages in the district.
Congress managed to win 86 out of 113 Indiramma model villages in Nellore revenue division alone. The TDP had to be content with just 20 panchayats, while the CPI(M), CPI, BJP and independents shared the rest.
The ruling party was able grab a significant percent of votes in most of these villages.
In fact, the trend, which surfaced in the local body elections had continued in the subsequent panchayat polls too.
Moreover, the party bagged most of the seats in these villages unanimously.
Indiramma programme was implemented in more than one-third of villages across the district to fulfil certain basic needs of the people and improve infrastructure over a period of three years.
The programme became popular among villages, as it has been providing pucca houses, drinking water supply, individual sanitary latrines, drainage, power supply to every household, road facilities for transport and pensions to eligible old age persons, weavers, widows and disabled.
