Pneumonia is the leading single cause of death among children across the world and in fact the number of deaths caused by this disease is more than the number of deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, said the Indian Academy of Paediatricians Ch. Mallikarjuna Rao.

Addressing a press conference on the World Pneumonia Day here on Tuesday, he pointed out that annually about 1.4 million children below the age of five years die of pneumonia and of which India accounts for about 25 per cent, making it the leading country in the world with China and Pakistan behind it.

According to Dr. Mallikarjuna Rao, the theme for this year’s World Pneumonia Day was ‘Focus on innovation’.
