World Forestry Day celebrated at zoo
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park Curator G. Ramalingam on Thursday explained the importance of forests and its eco-systems and underlined the need for sustainable maintenance of forests.
Speaking at a meeting conducted at Bioscope auditorium at the zoo, held in connection with the World Forestry Day celebrations, he said schoolchildren should understand the significance of maintaining ecological balance and try to improve greenery.
Later he distributed prizes to the winners of quiz, elocution, drawing and essay writing competitions conducted among schoolchildren. As part of celebrations, children from Stella Mary’s School, Zilla Parishad School, Narava took out a rally with placards carrying messages on preservation of biosphere from the Stella Mary’s School to the Zoo on March 17.
Mr. Ramalingam, in his message, said World Forestry Day was being observed every year on March 21 since 1971 to sensitise people on protection of forests and recreation of new forests. He said sustainable maintenance of forests assumed a lot of importance and called for efforts to raise the awareness level.
