The Nalgonda One-Town Police on Monday arrested over 50 members of the AP IKP Animators Employees' Association after they tried to force their way into the Collectorate as part of the agitation being organised since April 9 to press several demands, including payment of Rs.3,000 as the minimum wages.

Among the arrested persons were 45 women. They were let off after detention at the police station.

The agitators, led by the association's leaders - T. Gopi, J. Manga and M. Koteshwar - had originally planned to lay siege to the DRDA Project Director's office but changed the schedule in view of the schools bandh called by the Telangana Students' Vibhag.

Mr. Koteshwar said the animators would continue the agitation by staging relay hunger strike before the Samakhya Mahila Mandali offices on April 17 and laying siege to the Collectorate on April 23. The leaders criticised the Minister for Women Development and Child Welfare, Sunita Laxma Reddy, for not honouring her commitment of issuing orders on payment of Rs.3,000 as the minimum wage.
