To be a hub of sporting activity from May 1

  • Grass transplantation has been taken up to give a green look
  • Renovated stadium will be ready for inauguration in April first week

VIJAYAWADA: The sprawling Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium is gearing up for next season with renovation works in full swing. The outfield is all set to get a new green look as the authorities have taken up grass transplantation in all the grey areas. "We are also removing wild and unruly grass, along with systematic watering of the outfield," said district sports development officer B. Sudhakar.

    Water sprinklers

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has installed four water sprinklers in four directions, each one covering a 30-metre distance.

"We have a total of 12 watering points to distribute water systematically to the entire ground in less than three hours. In another 45 days, the outfield will be brought to proper shape," Mr. Sudhakar added.' The stadium will be the hub of sporting activity from May 1 when both VMC and District Sports Authority would hold the regular annual summer coaching camps in various sports and games segments.

The stadium will have additional infrastructure ready by this month end, when the multi-purpose indoor hall, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 30 lakh, will be ready for inauguration in the first week of April.

"The ground floor will be used for multi-purpose pursuits like gymnasium, weight training, table tennis and other indoor games, while the top floor will offer both furnished and non-furnished accommodation, especially to the sports academy inmates.

The furnished hall will accommodate 25 players, while the non-furnished hall will house around 100 inmates," Mr. Sudhakar pointed out.
