‘It was my alma mater that inspired me to take the first step towards stardom’
The excitement was palpable at Visakha Valley School on Thursday as the students eagerly waited for the homecoming of Sobhita Dhulipala, an alumnus of the school, who was recently adjudged the runner-up at the Miss India 2013 pageant. Stepping out of a brand new luxury sedan, there was a certain aura that surrounded Sobhita as she rushed to greet her former principal, teachers and staff of the school.
Towering over the students in her high-heels, she made her way from one classroom to another interacting with them and inspiring them to follow their dream. Speaking about her journey from a geeky girl in uniform to making it to the cover of fashion magazines,
Sobhita said that it was her alma mater that had inspired her to take the first step towards stardom. “I remember standing in the last row during assembly and listening to a speech by our principal. By the end of the speech I had goose bumps as I was so moved by her words.”
Principal of the school P. Sharda recalled an incident that had occurred on a school trip to Thailand where the airport security confiscated a bottle of sunscreen that Sobhita was carrying in her handbag. “Sobhita was so upset that she was in tears at the airport and pleaded with the security personnel not to confiscate it as it belonged to her mother.”
Reacting to the incident Sobhita, sitting in the principal’s office as a beauty queen laughed and said “see I was always a drama queen”.
Describing the visit as her homecoming, the very articulate Sobhita said she owes a lot to the beautiful school nestled between the hills for her success. Vice-principal of the school Kalpana Patro said that Sobhita always had a thirst for knowledge and it is perhaps this thirst that has propelled her in her journey to make a difference.
Bianca, a class 12 student, recalling the day that the Miss India results were announced said that there was so much excitement in school as everybody was proud that she was from their school.
It was an inspiring that someone just like us who had walked the same corridors and played in the same ground could achieve fame globally at such a young age. The students presented her with a scrapbook outlining her journey from the classroom to the ramp.
The book had photographs and interesting anecdotes scribbled in glitter ink.
A little memento that is sure to keep Sobhita motivated and grounded as she continues in her journey as an ambassador of the Country and the City of Destiny with her characteristic poise.
