Asaduddin Owaisi, Hyderabad MP and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief was charged with violating the model code of conduct for elections, and detained in the Humnabad police station on Saturday night. He was released later.
The police said that Mr. Owaisi had led a campaign rally in Basavakalyan without obtaining the necessary permissions. His vehicle was stopped at the Regional Transport Office check-post on the Solapur-Machilipattanam national highway. The police seized two guns from his vehicle, for which Mr. Owaisi failed to produce a licence.
He told the police that the guns did not belong to him; they were carried by a party worker who travelled with him. Mr. Owaisi was asked to collect the weapons after producing the necessary documents. He left for Hyderabad later, the police said. The MIM is fielding 12 candidates in the district: eight in Bidar and four in Basavakalyan.
