Rayalaseema Rashtra Samiti president Kuncham Venkata Subba Reddy represented to A.P. Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention into the damage being caused to public health by pollution caused by cement factories in Rayalaseema region.
Revenue officials and A.P. Pollution Control Board officials were indifferent to the party’s agitations since 15 months demanding steps to curb pollution by cement factories in the region, he told newsmen here on Friday.
Cement companies which were allotted vast extents of lands by the State government for setting up factories, were ignoring the stipulation to raise green belt in 33 per cent of the land allotted even after five years elapsed and to check pollution, Mr. Subba Reddy said.
However, officials concerned were reluctant to initiate action and merely wiling away time by giving periodical warnings, he alleged. Mr. Reddy said he filed nine writ petitions in the High Court on the issue so far. He demanded cancellation of concessions to pollution-causing units and action against negligent officials.
He sought a comprehensive inquiry and appropriate action on the cement companies concerned.
