The total number of persons who died due to the blast in a Cooling Tower in HPCL Visakh Refinery has gone up to 25 with a contract worker, A Raju, succumbing to his injuries on Friday.

Mr. A. Raju (aged 21 years) who was undergoing treatment in Old Care hospital has succumbed to injuries, according to an official statement released here.

Shifting of about 60 per cent of debris from the accident site to designated location is completed and balance is in progress.

A compensation cheque for Rs 20 lakh has been handed over to the District Collector for giving to the dependants of Mr. A. Raju. With this, a total amount of Rs 4.8 crore has been handed over by the HPCL to the District Collector so far. Eight patients are currently undergoing treatment in three city corporate hospitals – 6 in Seven Hills, one each in New Care and Manipal hospitals, the statement added.

The condition of the seven patients who are undergoing treatment at the National Burns Centre, Mumbai is reported to be stable. The HPCL Officials are monitoring the overall situation closely on round-the-clock basis.

A delegation of the CPI (M) submitted a memorandum to District Collector Solomon Arokiaraj and sought the intervention of the district administration in getting a judicial inquiry instituted to probe into the mishap.

The delegation comprising CPI (M) Visakha city secretariat member M Jaggu Naidu, secretary Visakha city B Ganga Rao and State secretariat member Ch Narsing Rao, wanted employment provided to one of the dependents of the victims, wages for all contract workers for the three days that the work was stopped in the refinery following the blast.

The delegation urged the Collector to help the dependents get the legal heir certificates to enable them to get the ex gratia amount paid by the company.
