Officials from IIM-Bangalore and IDRBT interact with beneficiaries

A team of professors and officials from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, and the Institute of Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) interacted with the beneficiaries of the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme in Kakinada rural and Gollaprolu mandals.

A team headed by Director of the IDRBT Sambamurthy and professor from the IIM Sriram visited Penumarthy in Kakinada rural mandal, where officials made arrangements for disbursement of the pensions for the aged under the DBT mode.

After interacting with a few beneficiaries, Mr. Sambamurthy expressed happiness over the payment of pension through the bank ATM. The team also studied the distribution of wages to labourers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and loans to women self-help groups.

During their interaction with the beneficiaries, the team members posed various questions on the process and were given detailed replies from the latter. The beneficiaries explained the team members about the procedure. Some of them even showed their Aadhaar cards and bank account passbooks to the team members. Beneficiaries of the pension scheme expressed happiness that the pension amount was being disbursed at their doorstep and they need not visit any office or bank to get the amount.

The team later proceeded to Chebrolu where they studied the distribution of ration under the Aadhaar-linked Public Distribution System. The beneficiaries told the team members that they were getting text messages on their mobile phones about the arrival of stocks and explained in detail how they were appending their thumb impression in electronic mode before getting rice, edible oil, and other commodities.

Joint Collector A. Babu, who accompanied the team, said that Aadhaar-linked PDS was being implemented successfully in 100 fair price shops in the district and the financial authentication was done through the Aadhaar seeding. “Either the white ration cardholder or any of the family members can get their ration by giving their thumb impression. The only requirement is that their name should be included in the ration card and they must undergo the Aadhaar,” Mr. Babu explained. Prof. Ananth from the IDRBT and Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency K. Madhukar Babu were present.
