Traffic police to enforce the rule strictly in Kurnool city and other towns
Fine to be imposed on drivers not wearing helmetThose talking on mobiles while driving will also be penalisedPolice not to insist on ISI branded helmets due to cost factor
KURNOOL: The traffic police are gearing up to enforce use of helmets from February 1 in Kurnool city and other towns.
Traffic Inspector Krishna Murthy and his team took out a rally wearing helmets in the city on Friday to motivate the public to use helmets. The inspector said drivers who violate the provision would be fined and there would be no leniency in enforcing it.
All two-wheeler riders including those riding 50 cc mopeds should wear helmets. "After all we are asking the public to wear them for their own safety," Krishna Murthy said.
Besides, those found talking on mobiles while driving would be penalised. However, the police might not insist upon two-wheeler drivers wearing only ISI branded helmets as some of the low-income groups could find the price inhibitive. Branded products are sold at Rs. 800 while unbranded helmets are available for Rs. 250. In the next two days, helmet sellers are likely to do brisk business.
Meanwhile, Deputy Transport Commissioner C. Ramesh said their department would not go into enforcing of the provision but insist upon those who visit the office for renewal of licenses, issuing of new licenses and registration of new vehicles wear helmets.
The invoice for new two-wheelers should also include the cost of the helmet.
