Widespread rain that battered the coal belt areas in the district over the last three days has taken a toll on coal production in the Open Cast Projects (OCPs) of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in the Kothagudem region.
Intermittent rains in Yellendu, Manuguru, and Kothagudem areas disrupted coal production in the SCCL’s OCPs for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, according to sources.
The PK OCP in Manuguru area recorded the maximum rainfall of 115 mm in the last 24 hours until 8 a.m. on Thursday. The Koyagudem OCP in Tekulapalli mandal experienced 19.6 mm rainfall followed by JK OCP in Yellendu which recorded 12.80 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, sources said. It is believed that the JK OCP and Koyagudem OCP in Yellendu area have suffered production loss of around 7,000 tonnes on a single day on Wednesday. Although, there was a let up in the heavy rains in some parts of coal belt areas on Thursday, coal production could not be taken up in a full-fledged manner due to stagnated rainwater at some points of a few OCPs in the coal belt region.
Additional motors were pressed into service to flush out the stagnated rainwater in the rain-hit projects.
According to the SCCL sources, heavy rains caused a loss of production of over 11,000 tonnes of coal worth about Rs. 2 crore in all the five OCPs in the Kothagudem region in the last three days.
However, the overall production loss is estimated to be more in the OCPs situated in other coal belt areas mainly those in Adilabad district, which is hard hit by heavy rains.
