A Division Bench of A.P. High Court comprising acting Chief Justice N. V. Ramana and Justice Vilas Afzul Purkar on Monday refused to accept the version of the police that they were making repairs within their existing premises near Charminar and they had not violated the law.

The bench expressed deep displeasure and asked the authorities when they would remove the ‘new structures’.

The bench was dealing with a writ petition on the construction activity taken up by police near Charminar police station within 100 meters of Charminar. It may be recalled that the bench treated the news story published in these columns as a writ petition and ordered notices suo motu.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Monday informed the bench that the police had sought permission for construction of a wall and it had not granted permission for construction as it was within 100 meters of the prohibited zone.

The bench granted one week’s time for the police and the State government to file a counter affidavit.
