SRIKAKULAM: Joint Collector E. Sridhar on Monday inaugurated a handloom exhibition “Cheneta Uppena” at the Kalinga Vysya Kalyanamantapam here. The 10-day exhibition is being conducted by the Handlooms Department.
Besides weavers’ societies from Singupuram, Rajam, Ponduru, Tolapi, Fazulbagpet, Akkulapeta and Badullapeta in the district, those from Payakaraopeta in Visakhapatnam district, Vikramapuram (Vizianagaram), Pochampally (Nalgonda), Chirala, Valaparthi and Kotapalem (Prakasam) are participating in the exhibition.
Mr. Sridhar called for promotion of handloom cloth by purchasing the cloth and wearing it at least for one day in a week. While the problems faced by weavers would be addressed at the district-level, those that could not be taken up here would be referred to the Government. Assistant Director of Handlooms M. Katamaraju said that 4,000 weavers were being given pensions and health insurance cards were given to 3,500. Cheneta Congress president V.V. Parvateesam said the rising yarn rates were a big burden for weavers. Efforts were on to get 4,000 houses for weavers with the help of Union Minister Panabaka Lakshmi. APCO former director K. Prasada Rao, weavers’ leader Manchu Chandraiahand others participated.
