Seek enhancement in wages for labourers
VISAKHAPATNAM: Members of A.P. State Civil Supplies Hamalis Union on Thursday took out a rally from RTC Complex to the Girijan Co-operative Corporation (GCC) office listing out a number of grievances and demands.
The rally was flagged off by AITUC leader V.V. Rama Rao.
Besides specified rates for loading and unloading of various commodities and forest produce, the union demanded night allowance of Rs.50, double wage rate for working on holidays and Sundays, insurance for GCC vehicles, loan facility, house sites and financial assistance to the kin of hamalis who die in harness.
The protest was led by hamalis union president G. Vamana Murthy and general secretary M. Manmadha Rao.
The main demand was increase in wage rates for kalasis (labourers) working for 11 godowns of the GCC in loading and unloading rice, sugar, wheat and forest produce.
The rates had not been raised during the last five years, the union leaders said. No night allowance is paid to kalasis when vehicles stop over in the forest area. It was also alleged that owing to lack of insurance for vehicles, kalasis injured in accidents were not getting any compensation.
Kalasis had no work security and any talk about rates was countered with threats of changing godowns, the leaders said in a memorandum.
