The Communist Party of India (CPI) has called for Guntur city bandh on Thursday to protest against the steep hike in non-residential property tax in Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) limits.

CPI and various people's organisations have taken strong objection to the abnormal increase in property tax ranging from 100 per cent to 1,000 per cent saying it would impose a huge burden on the tax payers and hamper the city's development.

CPI district secretary Muppalla Nageswara Rao alleged that the municipal corporation had taken a unilateral decision to increase the property tax without pondering over the consequences.

No other civic body in the State have such an exorbitant rate of tax on non-residential buildings. The GMC should reduce the tax rate to an affordable level lest the agitation should be intensified, he said.
