The groundwater levels in several mandals across the district have decreased significantly even before the onset of peak summer. The district has registered an average rainfall of 1358.5 mm till January during 2012-13, which is 32 per cent more compared to the previous year’s rainfall. While, several mandals recorded high rainfall over and above the last year’s rainfall, a few other mandals registered low to moderate rainfall in the last monsoon season. The Wyra and Konijerla mandals recorded low rainfall till January.
Notwithstanding the overall good rainfall, the groundwater levels registered drastic fall in a couple of mandals at the threshold of the current summer season due to factors like lack of uniformity in rainfall and rainwater harvesting systems. The groundwater levels in Sattupalli, Aswaraopet, Khammam Urban and Yellendu have sharply decreased over the last couple of weeks. According to official sources, the groundwater level in Sattupalli and Aswaraopet mandals dropped by 20 metres.
Meanwhile, Collector Siddharth Jain has directed the departments and agencies concerned to educate the general public to judiciously use the precious water and refrain from indiscriminate tapping of groundwater.
