Machilipatnam MLA and Government Whip Perni Venkataramayya, alias Nani, announced on Thursday that he will join the YSR Congress shortly and tendered resignation to the Government Whip’s post.

YSR Congress Guntur district election observer P. Gowtham Reddy told The Hindu that Mr. Venkataramayya met YSR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy at the Chanchalguda Jail during ‘mulakat.’ He will organise a meeting with his supporters in Machilipatnam in two or three days and only then announce the exact date of his joining the party.

Mr. Venkatramayya’s defection to the YSR Congress was a foregone conclusion with the MLA dropping enough hints to that effect. The YSR Congress too did not appoint anyone to the party posts in the Machilipatnam Assembly constituency till now. The Congress tried to appease him by giving him the Government Whip’s post, but to no avail. Inordinate delay in the approval of Mr. Venkataramayya’s files stuck in the Chief Minister’s peshi is being cited as the reason for his defection.
