The Godavari touched the first warning level of 43 feet at Bhadrachalam on Thursday night as a huge volume of floodwater from upstream led to a sharp rise in water level near the temple town.

A flood alert was sounded in all the low-lying areas across the river course in as many as eight mandals in the Bhadrachalam Agency. A flood control room (08742-231600) has been set up at the Collectorate in Khammam.

Road communication to around 16 villages under Tummalacheruvu, Gondigudem and Ammagaripalli gram panchayats in Aswapuram mandal was snapped as three local streams flooded low-level culverts. Taliperu river, a tributary of the Godavari, was also in spate in Charla mandal. A total of 18 boats in both the Bhadrachalam and Palvancha divisions have been positioned at strategic locations , said Bhadrachalam Sub-Collector Bharath Gupta.
