TDP supporters register protest
The town may have been painted yellow by Telugu Desam supporters, but the Guntur Municipal Corporation moved in swiftly on Friday pulling down hoardings and banners on the main roads citing the election code.
On Friday, the town planning department officers began pulling down hoardings and banners on major roads, which was resisted by Desam supporters. Led by former MLA, Sk. Ziauddin, party men called on Municipal Commissioner (I/C) P. Srinivasulu and registered their protest.
The Commissioner told them that the election code was in progress and said that any violation would be dealt with sternly.
The TDP men pleaded that the banners should be placed for a couple of days at least, but the GMC officials were equally stern in removing the encroachers.
Later, in the evening, as the GMC teams went about the work removing hoardings on the Ring Road leading to the centre where a statue of NTR was to be inaugurated by TDP president Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Desam supporters protested leading to some tense moments.
Policemen were deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
