In a joint sting operation, the Prakasam police and childline foundation NGO partner HELP rescued a 16-year-old girl allegedly pushed into prostitution, with the arrest of a man here early on Thursday.
Superintendent of Police K. Raghuram Reddy said Kandula Ekambaram (45), was part of a prostitution ring operating from Rajahmundry.
A police team led by Special Branch CI G Tirumala Rao arrested him at the railway station here when he handed over the girl to the NGO coordinator B.V. Sagar as the latter was about to hand over an amount as part of the sting operation. A team with Singarayakonda CI T.Ashok Vardhan was constituted to nab other members of the gang.
Keeping a close watch on the movement of the Ekambaram, Sagar befriended him and transferred Rs. 2,000 to his savings bank account in Guduru earlier. On questioning, the police found that Ekambaram used to procure minor girls from Chittor and other districts and send them to brothels in Chennai, Vijayawada, Eluru and other places. The girl was shifted to the ‘Asha Nivas’ of the NGO.
