VISAKHAPATNAM: A three-year-old girl was killed and four others severely injured in a blast at a house at Kancharapalem on Saturday afternoon.
Around 1 p.m. Priyanka, her parents, sister and maternal uncle were in their house at Dayanand Nagar EWS Colony beside the railway track. It was initially thought that a gas cylinder leak had resulted in the explosion. Priyanka died in the explosion while the others sustained critical injuries and were shifted to the King George Hospital for treatment.
The impact of the blast was so strong that the compound wall of the house collapse partially. Kancharapalem CI K. Prabhakar said that preliminary investigation revealed that some explosive material had caused the blast.
The family belong to the ‘Yerukula’ community, who earn their livelihood by hunting small wild animals like boars. They make some crude bomb-like shells containing explosive material, which when eaten by wild animals would kill them. Fire tenders from Marripalem brought the fire under control.
