Farmer electrocuted at Nunna; low-lying areas water-logged in city
Heavy rain that lashed the district claimed the life of two persons on Saturday. A 36-year-old farmer was electrocuted in Nunna village near here and a two-year-old girl drowned in an overflowing open drain in the city.
Madu Srinivasa Rao, 36, was carrying bran on his bicycle to feed his cattle. He was electrocuted when he came in contact with live wires that got snapped following strong gales.
Two other persons were injured in the incident. They were stated to be out of danger.
Supriya, 2, daughter of Durga, fell into an open drain under construction at Kabela Road here. Her parents were away when the accident took place.
Ex gratia sought
“The drain is overflowing and the girl could not identify it,” said CPI(M) leader Rama Rao. People of the area staged a sit-in to register their protest against the apathy of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC). They demanded that ex gratia be paid to members of the bereaved family.
The VMC agreed to provide the family a house, Mr. Rama Rao said.
Nuzvid received the highest rainfall of 11 cm. Gannavaram received a rainfall of 6 cm. Machilipatnam and Nandigama received 3 cm and 2 cm rainfall respectively.
