The golden jubilee celebrations of Nehru Zoological Park were marred by the news of the death of a giraffe that was being brought from Malaysia.
As part of the animal exchange programme, the zoo authorities acquired three giraffes — two female and a male — from Zoo Negara, Malaysia and they were sent by sea route. Of them, a female giraffe developed health complications during the journey and died by the time the ship reached Chennai port, according to zoo officials here.
“We received the news of the giraffe’s death at Chennai and a post-mortem is being carried out. We will know the reasons for the death after the report is received. The other two have started by road for Hyderabad and are expected here either by Thursday or Friday,” Director of Zoos P. Mallikarjuna Rao said. The zoo authorities had sought these three giraffes and planned to keep a female giraffe here and send the two others to Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam.
Former Indian Test cricketer V.V.S. Laxman on Wednesday joined the golden jubilee celebrations of Nehru Zoological Park and assured support from his side in promoting the zoo’s animal adoption programme.
