A garbage collector stabbed a housewife with a knife before attempting suicide by stabbing himself at Income Tax Colony on Road no. 12 of Banjara Hills on Tuesday.

The housewife, Prashanthi Kumari, 37, and the alleged attacker, Hussain, 20, are recuperating in hospitals but the motive behind the attempt on the life of the woman and the suicide attempt of the youngster are not yet known. The Banjara Hills police registered a case of attempt to murder. “Once Hussain regains consciousness, we will find out what drove him to attack the woman and attempt suicide,” Inspector M. Sudarshan said.

Hussain lives at nearby NBT Nagar. His grandmother collects garbage from the quarters of the colony daily. Ms. Kumari, wife of an IT department employee Praveen Kumar, reportedly chided Hussain's grandmother a few days ago accusing her of leaving work unfinished.

“Probably the old woman must have told about this to Hussain and the latter must have got angry,” the investigators surmise. For past three days, Hussain was coming to the quarters to collect garbage. He went away after collecting the litter at 8.30 a.m. and knocked the doors of Ms. Kumari's quarter again around noon.

“No one saw what had happened but the youngster apparently stabbed the woman on her back and inflicted three injuries on himself with the same knife,” the Inspector said. Other residents of the colony saw the two persons lying unconscious on the floor and rushed them to hospital. While the housewife was admitted to Care Hospital, the youth was shifted to Osmania General Hospital.
