GAPING HOLE

Though it was repaired just last year, a portion of the stretch between Nagarjuna Circle and GVK Mall once again caved in resulting in a traffic gridlock in Banjara Hills and Punjagutta areas on Saturday evening.

Earlier in the day the traffic police officials noticed that a small portion of the road had caved in, in front of the Jalagam Vengal Rao Park and cordoned off a part of the road for the GHMC to take up repair works. However, on digging the municipal staff realised that the portion of the road was more hollow than they had imagined as a pipeline was beneath it.

This forced them to barricade a bigger portion of the road to undertake repairs even though the road comes under the jurisdiction of the Roads & Buildings Department.

GHMC Commissioner M. T. Krishna Babu also visited the spot and instructed the officials to take up repair works on an urgent basis. He assured that the road will be repaired by Sunday morning keeping in view the heavy flow of traffic on the stretch.

Erosion of mud

“Last year repair works were carried out in this area by filling the hollow area with soil. This mud would have eroded resulting in this hole,” GHMC Deputy Commissioner Circle No. 10, M.S.S. Somaraju said, adding that the works will be completed soon.

Owing to the repair works, vehicles moved at a snail’s pace on the busy road leading to cascading traffic jams till Somajiguda, Masab Tank and other roads leading towards Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills into the night.
