VISAKHAPATNAM: A five-member chain-snatching gang was arrested by the Gopalapatnam Police on Thursday.

The gang members, who were in the age group of 26 - 30 years, were moving under suspicious circumstances at Gopalapatnam when Head Constable Nagabushanam and police constables Suryanarayana and G.V. Reddy spotted them. They immediately informed SIs Raghava Rao and Panda, and after they arrived, the accused were surrounded and taken into custody.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) R.S.R.K. Raju and CI Y. Govinda Rao said that the accused were addicted to vices and took to thefts and chain snatching.

The modus operandi of the gang was to conduct a recce of the designated spot. Later two members of the gang would go on a motorcycle and snatch chains from woman walking alone on the roads.

The accused were involved in thefts at Vizianagaram Bus Stand, near Srikakulam Bus Stand and near Simhachalam. Five gold ‘pushthula thadlu’ and a gold chain, which were mortgaged by the accused, were recovered by the police.

ACP Raju commended the Gopalapatnam Police for their prompt action.
