: A committee has been formed in the city to install a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhinagar. The statue will be installed in an open site belonging to the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.
The ‘Gandhiji Vigraha Pratishtapana Committee' is headed by MP Lagadapati Rajagopal as honorary chairman and Uppuluri Mallikharjuna Sarma, chairman, AP Madhya Vimochana Prachara Committee, as chairman.
MLC Ilapuram Venkaiah, MLA Malladi Vishnu, C.L. Kantha Rao of Gandhiji Mahila Kalasala, former city Congress president M.J. Ratna Kumar and city Congress committee general secretary A.K. Ansari are vice-presidents. Advocate Naraharisetti Srihari is the general secretary.
Dammalapati Chandrasekhar, Kolluri Venkateswara Rao, Kopparapu Uma Balaram, Vasireddy Anuradha, Javvadi Suryanarayana, A.V. Ramana and Kota Jayaraj are the secretaries, while Gandhiji Walkers Club president Konijeti Ramesh is the treasurer.
The committee said in a statement on Thursday that the ‘Ashtadasha' ideals of Mahatma Gandhi will be propagated from the statue. Gandhinagar was chosen as the ideal place to install the statue because the locality, despite bearing the name of the Father of the Nation, did not have a statue of the Mahatma until now, the statement said.
