The field staff and the officials of Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL), led by its Visakhapatnam Operation Circle Superintending Engineer D.V. Ramana Murthy, restored all the lines and transformers that were destroyed due to gales and sudden downpour in the city and rural areas of the district on Friday.

Later reviewing the repair works, Mr. Ramana Murthy said that 95 per cent of the damaged power cables were restored by noon and the remaining five per cent were restored by 1 p.m.

He said that the main power supply substations in the city -- Naval Wharf, Common point, Pendurthy and Nakkavanipalem were affected by gales and falling of tress.

He stated that due to failure of main substations there was disruption of power in most parts of the city.

Special teams

He said that special teams of field staff and officials rectified problems in all areas except in town and rural areas.

According to APEPDCL power supply data of the five districts, the consumption of power, which stood at 1,730 (MW) Mega Watts on May 19 evening came down to 1,500 MW on May 20 evening. The consumption touched 1,594 MW on Friday, perhaps due to the fact that cool climate and consumption for agriculture has come down.

The availability of power, to the tune of 300 to 500 MW, is more than the actual consumption in the company limits, maybe for the first time in recent days.

Damage

A tree fell across the road near Dr. V.S. Krishna College in the city resulting in partial damage to a parked scooter.
